The Best Lubricants for Your Lady Parts

By September 18, 2021November 2nd, 2021No Comments3 min read

It is very common for women to require lubricant such as oils or vaginal moisturizers for increased sexual pleasure. You are not alone! Common vaginal issues such as pain with intercourse and vaginal dryness can increase with age, particularly after menopause. Medications such as antihistamines, verbal prophylactic pills, chemotherapies can cause vaginal dryness as well as breastfeeding and menopause.

Latex-safe lubricants can help prevent the breakage of condoms or dental dams for safer sex. But, which one is right for your body and your needs? Sexual lubricants are short-acting and come in many types:

Water-based lubricants cause the least amount of irritation, are latex-safe and may dry out with extended time. Some common brand names include Good Clean Love, K-Y, Sylk (all-natural), and Ah! Yes.

Silicone-based lubricants are longer-lasting, usually, non-irritating can possibly cause staining, and are waterproof. These are not for use with silicone dilators, toys, or gynecologic products such as pessaries. Common brand names include AstroglideX, Pjur, Silky, Uberlube

Oil Based: possibly staining, nonirritating, latex safe. Some people can be allergic and there are concerns that they can cause bacterial or yeast infections therefore,  I do not recommend these (avocado, olive, peanut, corn or coconut).

I recommend…

Vulvar Dryness — Vmagic Organic Vulva Cream And Intimate Skin Care

It is recommended that you stay away from petroleum-based products (mineral oil, baby oil, petroleum jelly) as they are not latex safe and should not be used with condoms, dental dams, or diaphragms, and can cause irritation.  Also, avoid parabens or glycerin. Glycerin(often found in water-soluble lube) may cause yeast infections and parabens (to extend shelf-life)  may have estrogen-like properties, so it is best to avoid it, especially if you have had breast or other hormone-sensitive cancer.

Menopausal women, or women with low estrogen levels, may need more than a topical lubricant or moisturizer. Schedule an appointment with me as you may want to try prescription vaginal estrogen or steroids.
