Every woman needs a gentle cleanser to remove all of the dirt, oil, debris, and leftover makeup and sunscreen from a long day. You’ll want the rest of the products in your anti-aging skincare regimen to be working from a “blank slate,” so they’ll be super effective.

If your cleanser is too harsh, it may destroy the skin barrier, which makes your skin susceptible to dehydration and irreparable damage. I know it’s probably been years since most of you have taken chemistry, but you’re looking for cleansers that are low in pH, so your skin remains balanced. Some women may need to follow up their cleanser with a toner to restore low pH. Always cleanse twice a day, in the morning and right before bed!


You’ll want to detoxify your skin 2 or 3 times a week to exfoliate your skin and get rid of all of the dead skin cells and product build-up clogging your pores. At Total Health and Wellness, I create a detoxification plan that works for total body healing. It rids the body of all of the junk we’ve accumulated over the years. That build-up can get in the way of your digestion, make your skin look dull, disrupt your sleeping patterns, and other harmful effects. I can even conduct heavy metal testing to ensure you’re not being weighed down by an accumulation of heavy metals from air pollution or other sources.


Serums contain a higher concentration of the same powerful ingredients in your moisture. Choose serums that include age-defying ingredients like vitamin A, which is found in retinol, tretinoin, and tazarotene, and vitamin C. We need antioxidants that soak up environmental and biological stress, so we maintain a youthful appearance.

If you’re using an anti-aging serum, make sure you “pat” not “rub” the product into your skin.


As we get older, we stop producing as much sebum, which is excellent for acne-prone skin; but it can make our skin feel more dehydrated and flakey. Look for water binding moisturizers that prevent water evaporating from your skin!


Promise me; you’ll never leave the house without sunscreen! The sun emits harmful UV rays that speed up the aging process. It breaks down collagen, so our skin appears thinner and more wrinkly, like crepe paper. The sun can also cause us to develop age spots due to overexposure. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that’s at least SPF 30. It will also help you fade age spots and improve the overall tone and texture of your skin.

I like to tell my clients that the secret to anti-aging isn’t complicated. Most women just need help with structuring a basic routine that includes a cleanser, toner, exfoliant, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Now I know that sounds like a whole lot, but your entire morning and evening skincare routine shouldn’t take you more than 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Be gentle with your skin while applying products. I often find that when I keep things short, simple, and effective, I’m more likely to make them into a habit.
