SPF Is Your BFF: A Brief Guide To Finding The Correct Sunscreen For Your Skin Type

You are probably aware of the utmost importance for skin health, the use of sunscreen is the number one rule of a skincare routine; to consistently apply sunscreen every day, all year long. Sunscreens not only protect against sunburns but also protect against skin cancer. Additionally, it will also prevent premature skin aging.

BASIC RULES OF SPF (SUN PROTECTION FACTOR) FOR SKIN HEALTH

Whether you are going to the beach or for an early morning walk in winter, sunscreen is necessary. You are exposed to UV radiation whenever you are exposed to sunlight, even if you are inside sitting next to the window.

The SPF on your sunscreen bottle displays the strength of the sunscreen; that is how well it will protect your skin against radiation. If it is SPF 15, then it offers 15 times more protection than your skin without sunscreen. A sunscreen with SPF 50 will offer 50 times more protection. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, for all skin tones. SPF 30 filters about 97% of the UVB rays.

A broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against two types of radiation, UVA, and UVB, and both have adverse consequences on the skin. UVA radiation causes photoaging, which is wrinkles and skin sagging. On the other hand, UVB radiation is responsible for sunburns and is more carcinogenic. Ideally, your sunscreen should be broad-spectrum.

It takes about 15 minutes for your skin to absorb the sunscreen. Therefore, apply it at least 15 to 30 minutes before heading outside. In addition, apply enough sunscreen and rub it into the skin thoroughly. Adults need about one ounce (size of a golf ball or a shot glass worth) of sunscreen for full coverage of their body. And for your face, about the size of a nickel.

Plus, do not forget to apply it to the tops of your feet, ears, or back of your neck. Apply sunscreen to your scalp if you have exposed bald patches or wear a wide-brimmed hat or cap. Apply a lip balm with an SPF of at least 15.

If you are going to be outside for a long time, reapply sunscreen every two hours. Or immediately after swimming or sweating. You can also go for water-resistant sunscreens, which offer protection for 40 to 80 minutes. Last but not least, make sure your sunscreen is not expired!

THE RIGHT KIND OF SUNSCREEN FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE

Oily skin

Opt for oil-free formulations of sunscreen, such as gel or water-based.

Most gel-based sunscreens are lightweight, non-comedogenic, and non-sticky. A non-comedogenic will prevent clogging your pores and consequently acne formation. Furthermore, the gel will not initiate excessive oil or sebum production. Another bonus of gel sunscreen? Easy spreadability.

Look for the two-in-one option, a sunscreen that doubles as a moisturizer, so that you do not have to layer two products on your skin.

Dry skin

Pick a moisturizer with SPF benefits or sunscreen with skin-restoring ingredients such as ceramide or hyaluronic acid; it will reduce the appearance of wrinkles and add suppleness. You can also opt for an oil-based sunscreen or those containing nourishing emollients (plant oils or fruit butter). However, it is essential to choose a sunscreen that does not contain any irritants, such as fragrance, plant extracts, alcohol, or essential oils, as these will make your skin drier.

Sensitive skin

Before choosing your sunscreen, it is essential to know your skin type. The right sunscreen will not only protect your skin from harmful UV radiation but will also support the health of your skin. Applying sunscreen should not feel like a burden, something that you must endure on your skin just for the sake of its protection. Its application should be smooth and comfortable. So, make sure that you find the right one. After all, your SPF is your lifelong BFF. One that you should never give up on.
