How it Works

Endometrial ablation is a one-time, minimally invasive procedure that will either lighten or end your heavy bleeding during your menstrual cycle. This procedure involves using specialized tools that deliver radiofrequency energy to destroy (ablate) the linings of the uterus (endometrium). Radiofrequency energy vaporizes the endometrial tissues within minutes, which reduces, or, in some cases, completely stops menstrual bleeding.

Goals

Heavy menstrual bleeding may cause tiredness and nausea, moodiness, and missing work. Endometrial ablation in Dayton, Ohio, from Rosalind Mascall, MD, directly treats heavy menstrual bleeding and can drastically reduce these everyday issues. This procedure is especially suitable for women experiencing unusually heavy periods, anemia from blood loss, or periods that last longer than eight days.

Benefits

  • Reduced menstrual bleeding within a year
  • No pretreatment medicine
  • No hormonal side effects
  • No cuts necessary
  • Concludes within 30 minutes
  • Resume daily activities in a few days

The Treatment Overview

Your endometrial ablation starts with a personalized consultation with Dr. Roz, our fellowship-trained gynecologist and obstetrician. She will listen to your concerns and expectations, review your medical history, and determine if you’re a viable candidate for the procedure. After her assessment, she’ll curate a personalized treatment plan for you.

Your endometrial ablation will be performed as an in-office and outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. After delivering local anesthesia, Dr. Roz will insert a slender wand-like instrument inside the uterus. Once activated, the device will channel radiofrequency energy to vaporize the endometrial tissue. The device will then be removed.

Recovery & Results

You may experience menstrual-like cramps, discomfort, and a watery vaginal discharge (with some blood) for a few days. You may also experience frequent urination for up to 24 hours after the procedure. Dr. Roz will recommend over-the-counter medications to reduce discomfort and alleviate cramping. However, you can resume most of your daily activities and work after a week, liberated from heavy menstrual bleeding for a year or more.
